Vera Elizabeth Barton, 92 of Monessen went home to be with her Lord on June 27, 2017.  She was born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania on March 27, 1925 to the late George Yancey Johnson and Mary Frances Stokes.

Vera was a woman born before her times as she successfully juggled her family, work, and family business responsibilities throughout the years. She always volunteered at church and school functions while her children attended parochial and public schools in Monessen, Pennsylvania and took care of several family members in her home while they were sick. She was a living example of the Good Samaritan.  For a number of years, Vera was employed as a seamstress at Brookevale Sewing Factory in Monessen, Pennsylvania. In her senior years, she was a Foster Grandparent at Monessen Elementary Center.

Vera served as a past president of the Wayman A.M.E. Church Missionary Society and worked faithfully in the church kitchen, especially during the Lenten season. She was also a member of Wayman A.M.E. Church of Monessen.  While raising her family, Vera belonged to the Montonians and Jokettes social clubs, which were organized by several African-American women in the community.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Leo Barton, who passed away on February 7, 1999 after 51 years of marriage.  Vera was also a proud sister to her siblings, five sisters and two brothers, all whom preceded her in death. She leaves to celebrate her life two daughters and a son-in-law: Denise C. Barton and spouse H. Daniel Mujahid of Ann Arbor, MI; and Joann P. Barton, Monessen, PA.  Vera also has three granddaughters, Dr. Mahasin Mujahid (husband Raymond Fleming) of Berkeley, California; Sarah Mujahid of Berkeley, California; Niccole Fisher of Monessen and six great-grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Gloria Barton of Jacksonville, Florida; Shirley Johnson of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and one brother-in-law, William Hall Sr. of Jeannette, Pennsylvania and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

During her illness, Vera received loving care from her daughter, Joann and her granddaughter, Niccole and health care staff at the Mon Valley Care Center and Monongahela Valley Hospital.

In accordance with Vera’s last wishes, her burial occurred after a private service at Mon Valley Memorial Park in Donora.  In leiu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the United Negro College Fund. at http://give.uncf.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Donate_Mail_phone
